The first series of DC's Brave & The Bold, from which this book is compiled, started publication in 1955 and ran till 1983, finally shutting up its Batcave with issue 200. Recommended for content and developing biceps. This sturdy and hefty tome, weighs in at just over 900 pages with dust jacket and crisp printing and vibrant colours on good quality paper, far better than the 'four color' originals in the sixties and seventies The final 300 pages are largely dominated by one of my favourite artists of the period Jim Aparo, fresh from his time at Charlton, as he joins the bat team with issue 98 and starts to hit his stride from issue 104 on.

The book title itself is a slight misnomer as the first 400 odd pages are firmly ensconced in the Silver Age, but on the plus side a large chunk of the art in this period is by Neal Adams as he starts to exert his influence on DC and comics art in general.īob Haney's stories, unencumbered by canon, continuity and characterisation, have the strange capacity of being of their time and timeless at the same time and the book benefits from this. So, for me, the book gives a glimpse of something almost remembered but just out of reach.

The book ends on B&B 109, just before the first issues of B&B I bought as a youngster in 1974, during the great Marvel non distribution drought of that Spring.

After a brief tenure in the late 1980s scripting episodes of the animated series ThunderCats and The Comic Strip for Rankin/Bass, Haney retired from professional writing and settled in the seaside town of San Felipe in Baja California. In the course of his long career Haney worked on a vast number of DC titles, but he is perhaps best known for his pivotal role in the creation of Metamorpho, Eclipso and the original Teen Titans, his long runs on BATMAN AND ROBIN, SUICIDE SQUAD, TOMAHAWK and MYSTERY IN SPACE, and his prodigious contributions to editor Robert Kanigher's line of war comics. By 1956, however, he was working almost exclusively for DC, where he would remain until the early 1980s. He entered the comics field in 1948, writing war, crime and western stories for a wide variety of publishers, including FAWCETT, QUALITY, FOX, HARVEY, TOBY, HILLMAN and ST.
